I’ve thought about adding a widget showing my progress, but I wasn’t sure how to do that. I guess I’ll have to do it the old fashion way (what I did last time).
I’m sitting here on my couch and trying to edit. Next to the back door, my cat is snoozing happily (I can’t say in the sun because it’s cloudy today). My 32 inch TV is off. Well most of the time it’s off. The only time I’m watching is when the news is on. What’s surprising is that I turned the radio off and have pandora playing barely at hearing level.
At least I’m a quarter the way through the edits. Writing is easy, editing is a bear. 😦
I’ve been given such a lovely endorsement from Stuart it makes me feel guilty of not posting here more often. The best reason I can give as to why is that I’ve been busy on my first revision. Revisions are much harder than writing. When you’re first putting down the story you don’t have to worry about if it works or not. The goal is to get the gist of the story down.
I’ve done that, so the easy part is finished.
Maybe I should post a weekly update to show how far along I am (meaning in word count).
It’s been a while since I was last here. Sorry everyone! Lots of stuff going on. I went on a cruise vacation the last week in October. I had never been to Florida before, so I thought it was kinda neat sailing out of Miami.
Remember this, if you choose to go on a cruise the last week in October prepare for the Halloween costume party. It gets crazy, then again it might have been like that because the cruise line I chose was Carnival.
I digress, though the pictures do look fun, don’t they?
The other thing I’m having to deal with now is that I’m having to pack and move again. Since I’ve been out on my own I’ve been living in apartments. I’m also paying off my student loans. I have about three years left to go before that’s finished (I thought it was two, but I miscalculated). Think of it, I haven’t missed a single payment. Once it’s paid off, along with my car at about the same time it’ll be like having an extra week’s pay (won’t that be nice?) Anywho, I gotta move again because the complex I moved to last year is hiking my rent majorly.
I do have a new place, but nothing’s official yet. It’ll be good once I get it and then move into the apartment. Because of me packing and such the muses have quieted down a bit. Though recently they started knocking on the door once again. I’m about half finished with my story (if 50K words is half), which means I’ll be on the downhill slope for the rest of the plot.
Now I know word count shouldn’t be all that important, but in the end we do obsess over it. As of this moment I have a little over 35K words in my first original fiction story. I’ve dabbled in fanfic for years, but this is the first time I took the plunge. It’s amazing just how freeing creating your own universe is. Although at the same time I’m writing in a historical setting with real people and events. So it’s not so freeing as I once thought.
I’m writing about slavery and how at least one fictitious person is dealing with the realization that he owns slaves. People automatically think it takes place in the 1860s, but it doesn’t. It takes place over 50 years earlier and in England when the Evangelicals were pushing for reform and abolishing the slave trade. It took from October 1805 when the first vote failed spectacularly to 1833 when slavery was officially done away with in the British Empire and all because of one man.
So if you’re thinking you can’t make a difference, I beg to differ. William Wilberforce was one man who changed the course of the British Empire and freed millions upon millions of slaves.
Anywho back to my obsession on word count. The more I write the more I feel I will not reach the fabled 100K word mark. It’ll probably be somewhere between 50K and 75K. Not bad for a first time.
It’s been a while since I was here last. Sorry about that everyone! Real life kinda sorta took over, forcing me to put this aside for the time being.
I also put aside my story for a while. It wasn’t that the muses left me, it’s that I had to put it off to the side to work on something different. Sometimes that’s what it takes.
At least now that I’ve come back, the latest scene is coming fairly well (which is very nice). What’s also good is that I have the whole story pretty much mapped out. All I gotta do is write the darn thing!
I’ve also upped my daily word count goal. Originally I had it at 700 words per day (yeah, I know that’s piddlins, but hey, it’s something. With a friend’s recommendation I’ve upped to 1K. Kinda close to nano.
Don’t ask me to do nano, because I know I won’t be able to. I normally have too many things happening in November to sit down for a couple hours each night to pound out about 1600 words a day.
I’m still in my critique group. Boy, last time they were brutal. But that’s why I go there.
I mentioned that I would update how my writing has been progressing since that writer’s conference. I’m happy to say that I’ve been able to keep mostly on track with 700 words per day. The last few days, though, I really haven’t done writing per se, but more along the lines of editing sections to get them ready for critiquing. If it ends up adding to the word count, I’m all for it! 🙂
The biggest change is that I needed to dumb down a character. Meaning, the character could read, but not write or is familiar with math (or ciphers as he calls them). But he gets promoted to a very important position, so all is good. 😉
