Why did I pick such a twisted subject, or time period, to write about? Every time I access something on the web I find that there’s more behind the machinations of the people during this particular time period than is humanly possible.
I could be researching this subject for years and still not find everything there is to know about it.
So I ask once again, why?
Am I just a glutton for punishment?
Now that I’ve got your attention, I wanted you to know that if you’re writing a story that has a real person in it, and you’re as true to history as you can get, it is the hardest thing you will ever do. You have to research everyone involved to make sure that you have the person in the right place at the right time, or you will have to scrap the scene (which really isn’t fun at all).
What I mean is that writing anything that’s historical in nature and trying to remain true is the hardest thing you will ever do. I only hope that in the end I will do justice to the men and women I’m writing about.
Okay, I suspect you’re wondering who in the world is this that I’ve received a blog entry from? Well, you chose to follow me as Brenda Sackville. Sadly enough, that was a nom d’plum, or a pseudonym. I’ve decided to go with my actual name, which is what you see.
I’ve still been working on my manuscript and querying. *sigh*
Okay, so I’m still doing the first revision (where I’ll fix all the obvious stuff that I missed the first time around). I’ve also started looking at where I could go shopping what I’ve done. I might look at the big five, but I’m not that sure about it. I’ve heard horror stories which makes me a bit leery with them.
Right now those big five book publishers are:
- Hachette Book Group
- MacMillian Publishers
- Penguin Random House (used to be separate before they merged)
- Simon and Schuster
Not to mention the genre publishing houses such as Tor (for science fiction) Holman Publishers (Christian literature along with Bibles), and Taylor (publishes school yearbooks).
Then there’s all the small publishers that are more open to taking a first book from a writer, which is what I’ve been thinking about. Self publishing is good, but I’m also of the mind to see if I can go it the traditional route. If it ends up being a small press, then why am I to complain?

I’ve thought about adding a widget showing my progress, but I wasn’t sure how to do that. I guess I’ll have to do it the old fashion way (what I did last time).
I’m sitting here on my couch and trying to edit. Next to the back door, my cat is snoozing happily (I can’t say in the sun because it’s cloudy today). My 32 inch TV is off. Well most of the time it’s off. The only time I’m watching is when the news is on. What’s surprising is that I turned the radio off and have pandora playing barely at hearing level.
At least I’m a quarter the way through the edits. Writing is easy, editing is a bear. 😦

I’ve been given such a lovely endorsement from Stuart it makes me feel guilty of not posting here more often. The best reason I can give as to why is that I’ve been busy on my first revision. Revisions are much harder than writing. When you’re first putting down the story you don’t have to worry about if it works or not. The goal is to get the gist of the story down.
I’ve done that, so the easy part is finished.
Maybe I should post a weekly update to show how far along I am (meaning in word count).

Two lovely things happened today. I think I mentioned this before. If not then I probably should have. I finished my rough draft. All 443 pages and around 93K words.
Today I went out and had the manuscript printed out. It’s about an inch thick. For a long time I’ve always worked with computer files. This is the first time I’ve gone out and plopped down money to print something I’ve written. It actually makes it real.
Now comes the hard part, all those revisions and stuff. I know it’s crappy, so this is the time I get to see just how bad it really is so I can fix it.
The other lovely thing that happened, or is happening right now is that there’s clear wet stuff falling from the skies. I’m like “what is this?” See, where I live we should have over 5 1/2 inches of rain since the beginning of the year. Until today we’ve had maybe 0.8 inches. Yeah, it’s bad.
I luv the sound of rain hitting the windows. It’s just a lovely white noise. I hope I get to hear more of it as the days pass.
Now that I think back, I probably did post about finishing my rough draft. I guess I don’t remember because I slept since then. 😉
